Time to start shopping. Because insurance companies can release information on plans for the next calendar year two weeks before open enrollment season, we recommend that you begin reviewing options for new coverage in early October.
This is the Annual Election Period (AEP). During this time, you can:
Coverage for enrollment changes takes effect on January 1.
This is the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP). During this time, Medicare Advantage plan enrollees can disenroll from their Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare. You can then enroll in a standalone Part D prescription drug plan. You cannot switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or join one from Original Medicare during MADP.
