Step 2: Get Your Screenings

Don’t Forget Your Screenings

Finding health problems early – when they’re easier to treat – can help you live a healthier, happier life. That’s why preventive screenings are important. My HealthPath® rewards you for getting the screenings you need. We’ll let you know which screenings you’re eligible for this year.

Get Your Screenings

Here’s some additional information about common health screenings you might need:

Mammogram (Breast Cancer Screening)

Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer - and the second leading cause of cancer death in American women.

Women age 50 to 74 are eligible for a preventive mammogram at no cost. Preventive screenings are recommended every 2 years. You can earn 75 wellness points for mammography every 2 years.

Note: Your plan benefits do cover an annual mammogram if a diagnostic screening is needed.

Colorectal Cancer Screening

Colorectal cancer screening is important for both men and women age 50-75. It’s important that you talk with your doctor to understand your risk for colon cancer and the guidelines you should follow for testing. Testing options include:

  1. Colonoscopy. This is the most comprehensive diagnostic screening to detect for colon cancer and is recommended every 10 years in absence of other risk factors. You can earn 80 points for a colonoscopy every 10 years, if you and your doctor choose this screening option.
  2. Flexible sigmoidoscopy. This procedure is used to look at part of the colon to detect early signs of cancer. Your health care provider decides how often you need this test, however once every 5 years is the preventive recommendation. You can earn 60 points for a flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years, if you and your doctor choose this screening option.
  3. In-home FOBT (fecal occult blood test), FIT DNA or Colonography. If you haven’t had a colonoscopy (previous 9 years) or flexible sigmoidoscopy (previous 4 years), you can earn 20 wellness points if you complete any of these 3 tests. You can request an in-home FOBT screening test kit by calling 1-866-435-4372 . It’s free as part of your health plan benefits. You can talk with your doctor about the other screening options.

Bone Mass Measurement (Bone Density)

There are no symptoms of osteoporosis, a disease that can make your bones weak and brittle. You may not know you have it until you break a bone. Any at-risk women age 65-85 are eligible for a preventive Bone Density Screening every 2 years. You can earn 50 wellness points if you complete a screening within six months of a fracture.

Comprehensive Diabetes Control

If you are between the ages of 18-75 and have been diagnosed with diabetes, you can earn wellness points for monitoring and controlling your condition.

  1. Blood Sugar Check (HbA1C):
The HbA1C blood test will help you monitor your blood sugar level. Your doctor will likely monitor your levels throughout the year. The American Diabetes Association suggests an HbA1C of equal to or less than 7%. Wellness points are only earned for the first screening. You can earn 25 wellness points every year.
  2. Kidney Function Screening (Microalbumin Urine):
Even when diabetes is controlled, it can still lead to chronic kidney disease and kidney failure. Your doctor will monitor your levels throughout the year to determine the best treatment for you. You earn 15 wellness points for the first screening.
  3. Retinal Eye Exam (Eye Diseases):
Diabetes can damage part of your eye, called the retina, and cause vision loss. Protect your sight by getting an annual dilated retinal eye exam (DRE). It looks for damage caused by high blood sugar.

You can earn 50 wellness points by going to an optometrist or ophthalmologist for this screening.

While the screening itself has no copay, you might have to pay a copay for an exam by your eye care professional. Be sure to check your plan materials or ask us for specific details about your health plan.

If your retinal eye exam is performed by our in-home and outreach partner or in your primary care provider’s office as a scan only, you can earn 50 wellness points.

Your In-Home Visit

Your BlueCross Medicare plan includes an in-home visit - at no extra cost to you. This visit gives you the chance to talk about your medical needs in the comfort of your own home – in a relaxed environment and on your schedule.

Keep in mind that your in-home visit doesn’t replace regular visits to your PCP. Think of it as another opportunity to monitor your health and catch possible problems early, when they’re easier to manage and treat.

Making your in-home visit appointment is easy. Just call our health partner Signify Health at 1-855-319-4453 (TTY: 711). They’re available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST to talk with you.
