I’m turning 65. When should I sign up?

You can sign up for Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan during the three months before, the month of and the three months after your 65th birthday. If you don’t sign up for prescription drug coverage or a plan with prescription drug coverage during that time, you may pay a penalty on your premium once you do. When can I sign up for or switch plans?

The Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage goes from October 15 to December 7. If you don’t sign up then, you’ll have to wait until the next year, unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period when you have a big life change like getting married or losing your coverage. Call us if you have questions.

What’s your biggest piece of advice for me for choosing a plan?

When comparing plans, ask yourself these questions first. Can you still see your favorite doctors? Are all your drugs covered? What extra benefits do you get like dental, fitness and vision? And is it better for you to spend less per month and more each time you get care, or vice versa?
